One of the most frequently asked questions we get is “What is a Powder Cleanser?” and “How do I use one?”
So, we figured it was high time we decode powder cleansers for you.
If you are new to powder cleansers then read on. We'll explain how to use a powder cleanser, some ways to incorporate them in your skincare routine and some of our top tips for getting the most out of your powder cleanser.
Whether you are after a soft gentle cleanse, or a light exfoliation, powder cleansers have you covered.
The beauty is that these are 100% customisable cleansers. They are made up of dry ingredients in granular form which turns into a foam once combined with water.
You simply add a little water to your powder, and foam it up into your hands. It then transforms into the same consistency as a regular foaming cleanser.
We love powder washes because they are easy to travel with, ultra-versatile, contain more potent and therefore effective ingredients and have an extended shelf life (no liquid means they are less prone to mould).
Here are three different skincare routines to give you an example of how adaptable these babies are!
1 Start with a damp face. Apply a coin sized amount of powder into damp hands. Rub together until a soft foam lather is formed.
We like to keep our morning cleanse gentle and light so we add slightly more water. This way, you end up with a fluffy cloud-like texture that is soft and non-abrasive. It feels amazing first thing in the morning and won’t dry your skin out.
Our Subi Brightening Powder Cleanser is made with a low pH balance of 5.8 – 6.8, which makes it perfect for all skin types, including those with sensitive skin.
2 Cleanse your face thoroughly for about 60 seconds – don’t forget your neck!
3 Wash the cleanser off your face and pat dry with a face towel.
4 If you suffer from breakouts this is the perfect time for a clay mask.
Our Subi Holo Dream Brightening Pore Minimising Mask works to remove dead skin from the skin while brightening, tightening and refining your skin's texture.
Apply this to a dry face and leave it for 5 – 10 minutes.
The key?
Don’t leave clay masks on too long. You don’t want them to start ‘cracking’ on your face.
This means you have left them on too long and they can start drying out the skin – in turn irritating the skin. Once the mask feels tight on the skin it’s time to wash it off.
Wash the mask off with water. Holo Dream leaves a subtle glow on your skin which is perfect for your makeup base
5 Apply toner
6 Pop on your serums/oils/essences, eye cream, moisturiser and, of course, SPF
7 Do any makeup and you’re ready for the day!
1 Start off your night-time routine with Subi Bare Skin Balm
Cleansing balms are ideal as the first step in your evening routine. They gently remove makeup and SPF as well as sebum that has built up throughout the day. Simply scoop the balm out with the spatula and apply a small amount to your dry face.
Use your dry hands to gently work the balm into the face – the balm will melt into your hands and become an oil like texture. This is also the perfect time to do a facial massage. Facial massages are great for lymphatic drainage and ideal for soothing away the stresses of the day.
Wash away the cleansing balm with water. Splash your face with water and ensure your hands are slightly damp
2 Pour a small amount of Subi Brightening Powder Cleanser onto your hands and rub together until a foam like consistency appears
Rub the foam into your face for your second cleanse.
If you are new to the Korean Double Cleanse Method – the idea of two cleansers might sounds strange but don’t worry this will not irritate the skin.
The philosophy behind the double cleanse is that the first step is an oil cleanse that gently removes makeup, SPF and sebum, while the second step is a water-based cleanser that provides a further clean while also drawing out water-based residue including sweat and dirt from the skins surface.
Both Subi cleansers are made for sensitive skin and are pack full of gentle and soothing ingredients like Centella asiatica, nourishing Ceramides and vitamins.
3 Wash the cleanser off your face and gentle pat your face dry with a towel
4 Apply toner
5 Apply any night-time serums/essences/oils and your eye cream
6 Pop on your night cream or sleeping mask
This routine is perfect for when you are tight on time or on the go
1 Damp your face and mix the powder cleanser in to your hands.
Use slightly less water than you normally would so that the powder remains grittier. Use these granules as a gentle exfoliator on your skin.
2 Cleanse face for about 60 seconds
3 Wash off cleanser and dry face with a damp towel
4 Pop on a toner and your moisturiser or gel
5 Finish off with some SPF and you are good to go
Here are a few tips and tricks for getting the most out of your powder cleansers.
Travel is coming back. Finally! We recommend always popping your powder cleanser into your bag when you travel – not only is it TGA approved so you won’t have to worry about it getting confiscated at the airport, but it’s also super easy to use without spilling.
After a long flight you can go into the bathroom and give your face a nice gentle cleanse. Post-flight your skin will thank you for the nutrient and moisture hit.
We know that it can be super convenient to keep your cleansers in the shower so that you can wash your face and hair at the same time, but this runs the risk of getting your powder cleanser wet.
Remember these are activated with water so if water accidentally gets into the bottle, it can turn your powder into a paste. Not ideal.
Keep your powder wash in your vanity drawer or cupboards.
If you have any questions about powder cleansers or your skincare routine in general, don’t forget to reach out to Subi – we are always here to help.
