Here’s everything you need to know about pimples, patches and pregnancy.
Along with the joy of finding out you’re pregnant, there can be a few other unwanted side-effects – morning sickness and hormones going haywire. For many, pimples also make an appearance.
It turns out that if you’re coming off birth control after years of use, your skin might be readjusting to new hormonal levels. Several pills decrease testosterone circulation, which has the effect of reducing sebum production while you’re on the pill. Without the pill, however, your sebum levels can increase, leading to clogged pores and resulting breakouts.

Perfect Pimple Patch is 100% drug free, making it perfectly safe for both pregnant women and breast-feeding mums.
Our patches work by absorbing secretions from a pimple in the gel casing of the patch itself, helping to keep the area moist to avoid acne scarring. Perfect Pimple Patch contains none of the other anti-acne medications commonly used in topical treatments like salicylic acid or Vitamin A.
Ingredients to skip. There are a few anti-acne ingredients that you should avoid during pregnancy. These include Retin-A, Retinol and Retinyl Palmitate, Tazorac and Accutane (Roaccutane), Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic acids. These ingredients may have an impact on the unborn foetus and its development, and should therefore be avoided.
Less is More. If you haven’t had a pimple in years, it can be tempting to throw the kitchen sink at it. While it might feel good to do something proactive, pregnancy is a time when your skin is at its most sensitive. Doing too much can leave you with a weakened skin barrier and increased your risk of inflammation.
Go oil-free. An easy way to keep your sebum levels under control is to use an oil-free moisturiser that locks in hydration without irritation. As a general rule, be mindful to use gentle skincare products during pregnancy.
